Flat pack furniture is designed to be assembled once. Nothing about the fasteners assumes a second pass, and that is where the trouble starts rather than in the moving itself.

Why Screws Into Particleboard Fail
Particleboard is compressed wood particles and adhesive, and a screw driven into it cuts a thread through that material rather than into a solid grain.
Removing the screw takes some of that material with it, so the hole is wider and the remaining thread is shallower.
Driving the same screw back in finds less to grip, and the joint clamps with less force even when the screw is tight.

What Happened With Mine
An open-shelf wooden stand with two levels, taken apart to move and reassembled at the other end.
It went back together and it has been a little flimsy since, immediately rather than gradually. The fasteners were screws.
It still holds a TV and a soundbar on the top surface and has done for the couple of years since, so flimsy means noticeable movement rather than unsafe.

What Actually Breaks in Transit
Damage during a move follows a few patterns, and none of them is the piece simply falling apart.
Racking is the main one, where a cabinet is twisted out of square by being carried at an angle or set down unevenly. Joints loosen without anything visibly breaking.
Corner damage on panel edges is the most common visible harm, and on particleboard the edge crumbles rather than dents.
Back panels come loose because they are attached with small nails or staples into thin board, and they take the load when a cabinet twists.
Doors and drawers going out of alignment is the symptom people notice afterward, and it is usually the frame having racked rather than the door itself moving.

Moving It Assembled
Better where it fits
An intact piece keeps every joint at its original tightness, which no reassembly can restore.
Support the base, not the top
Lifting a cabinet by its top panel puts all the load through the joints you are trying to protect.
Empty it first
Weight inside multiplies the stress on joints during a lift, and it is what causes the racking that loosens things.
Strap rather than grip
Moving straps distribute load across the frame instead of concentrating it wherever hands happen to be.
Doing it that way is not a guarantee, and it removes most of what causes damage during a move rather than leaving it to chance.
If You Must Take It Apart
Photograph each stage rather than trusting the instructions, since the original sheet is rarely still around and the order matters.
Bag the hardware by stage rather than all together, because fasteners that look identical frequently differ in length.
Keep panels flat and stacked in transit, as flat pack panels warp when leant against a wall under their own weight.
And work out which fasteners you have before starting, since a cabinet held with cam locks is a much better candidate for disassembly than one held with screws.
Making a Reassembled Piece Tighter
Longer or thicker screws find fresh material below the damaged thread, which is the simplest fix and works once.
Wooden matchsticks or dowel with glue packed into a stripped hole gives a new screw something to bite, and it is a genuine repair rather than a bodge.
Corner brackets on the inside of a frame restore rigidity without touching the original holes at all, and they are invisible on a closed cabinet.
A backing panel matters more than people realize, since the thin board on the back of a cabinet is what stops it racking. Reattaching it properly, with all its nails or screws, does more for stability than the main joints do.
Weight on Top Is a Separate Question
A reassembled piece being weaker matters most in relation to what sits on it.
Manufacturer weight limits assume original assembly, and a piece rebuilt with stripped fasteners has less margin than those figures allow for.
Distributing weight across a surface rather than concentrating it in one spot helps, since a point load stresses the nearest joints hardest.
Keeping heavy items low is the general principle, because weight high up puts more strain on a frame that is already less rigid than it was.

What Survives Moves Well
Solid wood with traditional joinery, which was built to be taken apart and put back together for exactly this reason.

Deciding Whether to Move It At All
Cheap flat pack frequently costs less to replace than to move, once transport and the time to disassemble are counted.
Pieces already showing wear are unlikely to improve through a move, and a wobbly cabinet becomes a wobblier one.
Anything with glued joints is effectively single-use, and attempting disassembly damages the board rather than releasing the joint.
