Is the Grill Function on an Air Fryer Worth Using? Situational Guide For Home Cooking

For most things, no. The grill setting on a combo cooker is a hotter version of the same circulating air, and it does not produce what a dedicated grill produces because the mechanism is different.

Mine has one and I do not like it. It does not do as good a job as my Foreman or my outdoor grill, and after a couple of years with the machine I have stopped reaching for that setting.

Quick Answer

Grill functions on air fryers usually run the top element harder with the fan going. That browns the surface and it does not sear, does not mark, and does not render fat the way contact or flame grilling does. It is closest to a broiler with a fan.

What the Setting Actually Does

MethodHeat sourceWhat you get
Air fryer grill settingTop element plus fanEven browning, no sear
Contact grillTwo hot plates pressingMarks, fast cook, fat drains
Outdoor gas or charcoalFlame and hot gratesSear, char, smoke flavor
Oven broilerTop element, no fanSurface browning, slower

A grill cooks primarily by conduction from a hot surface, or by radiant heat from flame. Both put a lot of energy into a small contact area very quickly, which is what creates a crust.

An air fryer moves hot air. Air carries far less energy per unit than metal or flame, so it browns the whole surface gradually rather than searing one face.

That difference is not a quality problem with any particular machine. It is the reason the results feel wrong even on a well-built unit that does everything else properly.

Why Mine Disappoints Me

I have a contact grill and an outdoor grill, so I have a direct comparison, and the air fryer grill setting loses on both.

Against the Foreman, the difference is contact. Meat pressed between two hot plates cooks faster, marks properly, and comes out with a texture the air fryer does not reproduce.

Against the outdoor grill it is not close at all. Flame and smoke do something no enclosed appliance replicates, and that is the whole reason to go outside and use one.

What the air fryer does well is everything else. Baked potatoes, chicken, fries, appetizer things, and I have baked a whole loaf of bread in it using the bake feature. The grill setting is the one function I would not miss if it disappeared.

Someone without any other grill might reasonably feel differently about it, since browned food is better than pale food, and the direct comparison sits in indoor grill against air fryer.

When It Is Genuinely Useful

Finishing something already cooked

Browning a top, crisping cheese, or putting color on something that came out pale. This is the setting doing what it is actually good at.

Small quantities

Two pieces of chicken with no other equipment to heat up. Convenience wins where quality is not the priority.

When you have no alternative

Apartments without balconies and homes without a broiler make this a reasonable option rather than a compromise.

Reheating leftovers you want crisp

Pizza, fried food, and anything that went soft in the fridge come back better under a hot top element than in a microwave.

Vegetables

Peppers, asparagus, and zucchini take color well under circulating heat and do not need the sear that meat does, covered in what to cook in an air fryer.

Why Browning and Searing Are Not the Same

The distinction sounds pedantic and it explains almost every complaint about grill functions on small appliances.

Browning happens across a surface as it dries and its sugars and proteins react to heat. It produces color and flavor, and it happens gradually and fairly evenly.

Searing is browning driven hard and fast at a contact point, hot enough that the surface transforms before the interior overcooks. That needs a lot of energy delivered into a small area quickly.

Air simply cannot deliver that. Metal at the same temperature transfers heat far faster than air at that temperature, which is why a pan sears and an oven does not.

That is also why a grill setting can leave meat looking pale while being fully cooked through. The interior reaches temperature before the surface has had enough energy to transform, and waiting longer overcooks the middle.

Knowing that changes how you use the setting. If you want color, start with a dry surface and get the food close to the element. If you want a crust, use a pan or a grill and accept that this appliance was never going to do it.

Getting the Most From It

Preheat properly if the machine allows it. A cold cavity means the surface warms gradually, which is the opposite of what browning needs.

Position food as close to the top element as the rack will allow, since radiant heat drops off quickly with even a small increase in distance.

Pat food dry before it goes in. Surface moisture has to evaporate before any browning can start, and wet food simply steams for the first several minutes.

Use less oil than you would for grilling, since circulating air spreads it and too much smokes, and technique sits in how to use an air fryer combo cooker.

The Combo Cooker Trade

Combo units bundle several functions together, and each one is a compromise against a dedicated appliance. That is the deal you are making rather than a defect in the product.

The air fry function is usually the strongest, since that is what the machine is engineered around. Bake tends to work well too. Grill and dehydrate are typically the weakest of the set.

Whether that is worth it depends on counter space and how many separate appliances you would otherwise be storing. Mine is big on the counter, which is the cost I notice most often.

For someone replacing three appliances with one, the compromise makes sense even where individual functions underperform, covered in combo cookers against separate appliances.

What to Use Instead

A contact grill for anything you want marked and cooked quickly. It also drains fat away from the food, which the air fryer handles differently.

An oven broiler for larger quantities, since a full-size element covers more area than a small appliance can.

A cast iron pan on a hot hob for a genuine sear, which is the closest indoor approximation to what a grill does to a steak.

And an outdoor grill for anything where smoke and char are the point, which no enclosed appliance replicates, covered in indoor grills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the grill function on an air fryer worth using?

For finishing and browning, yes. For anything you want seared or marked, no. It runs the top element harder with the fan going, which browns rather than sears.

Why does it not taste like grilling?

Grilling cooks by conduction from hot metal or radiant flame heat. Circulating air carries far less energy per unit, so it browns the whole surface instead of searing one face.

Can it replace an outdoor grill?

No. Flame and smoke produce flavor and char that no enclosed appliance reproduces, which is the reason outdoor grilling exists.

How does it compare to a contact grill?

A contact grill presses food between hot plates, which cooks faster, marks properly, and drains fat. The air fryer grill setting does none of those.

What is the grill setting good for?

Finishing something already cooked, crisping cheese, browning a pale top, and vegetables that take color without needing a sear.

Should I buy a combo cooker for the grill function?

No. Air frying and baking are the strong functions on most combo units, and grill is typically among the weakest.

Why does meat come out pale but fully cooked?

The interior reaches temperature before the surface gets enough energy to brown properly. Waiting longer overcooks the middle rather than fixing the color.

How do I get better results from it?

Preheat if you can, put food as close to the top element as the rack allows, pat it dry first, and use less oil than you would for real grilling.

Hi, I'm Austin, founder and writer at SmartLifeItems. I started SmartLifeItems because I got tired of product roundups that read like they were written by someone who'd never seen the products they were recommending. Every guide here focuses on the questions that actually matter when you're deciding where to spend: which option performs, which one cuts corners, and which one fits how you'll actually use it. I write across the kitchen, home, coffee, baking, and smart home categories, with a focus on the under-$200 range where most people actually shop. Some products I've used directly; many I research in depth, comparing specifications, reading owner reviews, and pulling apart the marketing claims. Either way, I aim to be transparent about how I arrived at each recommendation. SmartLifeItems is part of a small network of focused review sites I run. If a recommendation helps and you buy through an Amazon link on the site, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, which keeps the site free of intrusive ads and funds the time to do this research properly.
